Bachpan Ke Din - Gilli Danda

Unknown     04:02     0

Gilli Danda is an traditional sports game played in the small towns and rural areas in the countries like India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nepal And also in Turkey, Italy and Cambodia. We mastered this game before we learnt how to walk! Gilli Danda is in every Indian's blood! There is no maximum number of players or teams. It can be played where each individual plays for themselves, or between two teams. It is an ancient sport of India, possibly with origins over 2500 years ago. It is believed to be the origin of Western games such as cricket, baseball etc.

The Gilli Danda game is played with two sticks: a a long wooden stick called a Danda, which is used to hit a small oval-shaped piece of wood, known as Gilli. The player standing in a small circle, puts the gilli in an inclined manner like a see-saw with one end of the gilli touching the ground while the other end is in air. Then the player uses the danda to hit the gilli at the upper end, which flips it into the air. Then the player strikes the gilli, hitting it as far as possible. The player is required to run and touch a pre-agreed point outside the circle before the gilli is retrieved by opponent. This aspect of the game is similar to runs in cricket or baseball.

Grew up playing this street games, had made our childhood, our 'Bachpan Ke Din' wonderful and awesome!!!
